This thoughts been for a while in my mind! When you work for a US company, you come to know about happenings and holidays in the US before you come to know when is holi! The latest news piece that prompted me to come back to this particular train of thoughts is the news piece about the Playsation 3 time issue. The older PS3 (non-slim versions) considered 2010 as a leap year. As a result their time mismatched from the servers on the Playstation Network and some of the user data (trophies won etc) were unavailable/corrupted for some users. Even as we speak, Sony updated with the news and the fix (manually changing the date on PS to 1 March 2010 fixed the issue). However, many of the US news majors on the net are yet to catch up with the latest update and still running the news about the failure without the latest updates. It leads me to believe that the US night time news can be better handled by folks where its daytime. Interesting thought! Will any online News media try out the same?
So many times reading a particular news piece in the newspaper or watching it on the TV, I feel that ain't that a old news? Yeah, maybe coz being employed by an internet giant, I get to know News as it happens while the traditional media takes its own sweet time to comeup with the latest (err.. oxymoron? )!
Bing has come up with a new feature that doesn't exist in the market as of date! It now gives Auto suggests based on your past searches. Google also stores your past searches(if you are logged into google) using web history. Yahoo now seems to be the only safe search engine out there which doesn't seem to be storing users past searches!
As per bing offical blog
In fact, 44% of non-navigational search sessions last longer than 1 week!
This move might again stir up the Hornets nest of privacy concerns! Lets wait and watch!

An arbit post! After a looong time! Times have been changing! From my yesteryears of college days to today of working hours. Yesterday was the first Pragyan in my last 4 years that I didnt attend! Why I didn't go could be a stupid reason but a rational one. So unlike me! And then the last weekend. Saying out something that you always wanted to say to a dear one is always relieving. After a while you may think that maybe you should not have said / done so. But I believe in living in the world knowing that I did whatever I could. If something went wrong then maybe it was my mistake or maybe none of my fault. But anygiven day its far better than living in the world thinking what if I would ve done so. Had it be any different? This thought of 'maybe it would ve been different if I would ve done so' is the most killing one. I believe in action. Do what you want to do. Be ready to face all its consequences. Don't just sit there wondering if you should do something or not! I do so in each and everything except for one thing - whenever the question pertains to a member of the opposite sex, then you can count on me to take forever to get out of the loop as to whether I should or whether I should not! Though I ve been working upon it lately and I think I ve overcome the sole indecision factor to a greater extend. Still many a times I think that maybe I shouldn't have said so to her. But then that wouldn't ve been me right? I am what I am. And you need to accept me in my entirety. With my flaws and failures.
Its funnily weird yet a well known strange fact that writing/talking/blogging out helps your to vent out. I wanted to say something! Twitter was a bit short. FB and gtalk - too many people. So here I am. In my new home. Talking out to the world. cheers!

How to setup dns in slicehost?
Create the dns for your primary domain name using the setup as provided by slicehost.
Once you have a proper working domain name configured on your slicehost,
to add a sub-domain,
login to slicehost admin
Go to DNS tab.
Click on records next to your domain name.
Create a new record
Name yourSubdomain. <-- Note the last (dot). its compulsory
Data - your ip address to where you want to point your subdomain to. Most probably you want it to point to your slicehost ip itself.
change TTL if you want to.
Now you have yourSubdomain.yourDomain up and running.
PS: Am assuming you are using your slicehost dns as your primary dns.
Ok, so first and foremost about the heading. Its a direct search term that I got on this blog. I realised that even though I answered the query in this post, the user actually never got to see it. My bad!
Ok, assumption 1: You are using Fedora as your server distro. If you are using some other distro, please modify the yum commands as per your distro.
These steps can rather be used to set up a working LAMP
Type the following on your terminal
yum install apache mysql mysql-server phpmyadmin
service start mysqld
service start httpd
These will do the basics for you. You still wont be able to access your apache running on your host because of firewall/iptables.
referer to this post for further instructions on how to get it all up and running.
Twitter is facing another round of phising attack. This time again in the well known "lol is it you" format.
This spreads like a viral only through infected accounts. Once a person is tricked into clicking a link that he gets as a direct message, he is presented with a false twitter login. The person gives in his twitter username and password and then the malware sends out similar direct message to the infected person's followers.
I got one such dm yesterday from one of my friend. When another dm came from the guy today, I told him that most probably his account has been compromised. He did whats the right thing to do. Change his password. Right now this malware is not known to change the password.
A sample dm received from an infected account:
"Lol. this you?? http://easyhair.net/?rid=http://twitter.verify.bzpharma.net/login"
Dont click on the link.
The affected accounts are now being used to send direct spam links like
"free get bigger and have sex longer, go here http://bedfordhealth.com/?rid=http://callbling.com"
What to do if you ve entered your twitter password on such a site?
So what to do if your twitter account is sending out such direct messages?
Immediately login to https://twitter.com/login and change your password. Do not click on any link to go the twitter site. Thats why I ve not linked the twitter url above. Type it yourself in the address bar:
After logging in, click on settings in right hand top corner.
In the settings page, go to Password tab (second from left) and change your password.
What to do if you receive such dms from someone you follow.
You can tweet @yourfriendname telling him you are getting dms from his account. That ways rest of your followers will also come to know that a particular account is infected.
example of a tweet you can send @yourFriend
@friend ur account is hacked/infected. getting dm s from ur acc. plz check/change ur passwd.
The fact that the second dm doesnt ask for your twitter username password says that this attack is being used simple for spamming purpose, atleast till the time being.
This attack doesn't misuse any twitter vulnerability but rather the social vulnerability that even google cant avoid - phising.
Most of the browsers now warn you when you click on such links. You are presented with a screen like this in firefox:
Opera goes a step ahead and shows a fraud site message in the address bar even if you proceed to the site.
However one step where opera fails from firefox is that once I click on proceed in opera, it saves that in preferences and doesn't show the warning again. Whereas firefox shows the warning every time you click on the link. Despite you agreeing to visit the malicious site. I think Firefox's way is better than Opera's. For two reasons:
- Even if I ve agreed to proceed to a malicious site once, it should still warn me. There could be a explicit checkbox that dont ever show me this warning for this site, but till then firefox's way is better.
- In cases where people share computers/sessions in same browser, the second user will never get to see the warning page in Opera. Even though the fraud warning is there in address bar, he might still miss it.
You can read more about the twitter attack on this article on mashable, from where I partly picked up the heading.
PS: I picked up the original pic used right in the beginning from sitebuildertips.com
Slicehost, the webhost on which this blog is hosted have upgraded their basic slice features starting February 17, 2010. Now for a monthly charge of $20, you get 150GB of bandwidth. It was earlier 100GB per month. Similarly all other slices have been upgraded. Also they have introduced new slice sizes, which in their own words
to help with a smoother, more consistent upgrade path we are very pleased to offer our new 'Intermediate Slices'. They sit nicely between our most popular Slice sizes. We have introduced a 384Slice, a 768Slice, a 1.5GB Slice and a 3GB Slice.
The prices of the new Slices will also allow for an easier resize path - the new Slices start at just $25.
Also, slicehost now have started "Professional Services", which basically mean you pay them and they do whatever you want :)
The upgrades are in effect immediately. You can see your upgraded bandwidths at your slicehost manager
The Indiblogger meet at Kyra, bangalore sponsored by Kingfisher was a big hit!
The Kyra Theater was almost all jampacked, with all but few of the the 150 attendees being able to attend it. There were a couple of surprise visits also. I mentioned Murali in my last post, where he said "I am not a blogger". It so turned out that there were a couple of more people who were not bloggers but had tagged along with their blogger friends. Hope these guys get started with blogging soon!
Ok, now about two of the people about whom I mentioned in the last post.
First, the eye opener, the blind blogger who is just visually impaired - Raaghav .
This guy is a role model for people. Not just for visually impaired but for everyone!
The other one is Vivek, the youngest blogger out there in the meetup :)
Well, as always, time flies when its good times!
Before long it was 6 and we had to get out of Kyra!
Thanks a zillion to kingfisher, Kyra and the indiblogger team for the meetup!
Things to do: To write a about us page for the indiblogger team :D as a token of thanks and appreciation!
It was great meeting him and I hope to know and meet him more and then write up more about him!
Then there was this elderly person with Indirank 79! He had great words of wisdoms about blogging and also about indirank :P
Apparently "too many posts in a day to your blog are counted as null" by the indirank! :!
